The Join For Joe initiative began in August 2010 when students at Loyola Blakefield hosted a bone marrow registry drive in the hopes of finding a match for their fellow classmate Joe Gorman, who was valiantly battling leukemia. An overwhelming 886 people were registered at the first Join for Joe Bone Marrow Drive. Regrettably Joe passed away in March of 2011, but his peers honor his memory every year by running “Join for Joe Senior Swab Day.”
In the past eleven years, we have hosted 39 drives at 11 different schools across the Baltimore / D.C. area. This has resulted in over 2,700 potential life-savers being added to the bone marrow registry, which has led to 10 life-saving matches!
